Freedom is a reality in Christ!

Can a Christian Have a Demon?

The short answer to this question is, Yes! Emphatically, yes, and many believers need deliverance from demons. Many people struggle with the idea that a Christian can be oppressed or defiled by an evil presence. This is primarily due to an ignorance of spiritual laws that govern the spirit realm and our interaction with it. In scripture, a person’s physical body is often referred to as a temple. For example: When the pharisees asked Jesus about the physical temple in which they worshiped, he said “destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it again.” That statement baffled the Pharisees because they did not understand that Jesus referred to his physical body. The actual, physical temple in Jerusalem took years to build. Again, in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 our bodies are referred to as temples “do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? This is significant because a temple is a place that can be occupied. We are referred to as individual places that can be occupied by the spirit of God or demons.

1 Corinthians 3:17 says “If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” This means that it is possible to bring defilement to that which has been made clean by the spirit of God. Our temples are defiled by engaging in sin, and allowing the spirits associated with our sins to gain access to our lives. Since we are spirit beings, living within a temple, our bodies; our spirit can have access to other spirits. The Bible says, they that worship the Lord, must do so in spirit and in truth, because God is spirit. When we sense the presence of the Lord, or his peace, it is our spirit engaging with his spirit. Likewise, we can sense the presence of unclean spirits like: fear, perversion, anxiety. As we continue to engage with these spirits they take residence in our temples, calling us their homes. Jesus said, when an unclean spirit leaves a man, it goes about seeking rest, but then says, I will return to my home.

Your temple can house any spirit that you grant access to. Some will ask, what happens to the spirit of the lord inside of me? The Holy Spirit is a person. The Holy Spirit is not wind that fills the house, he is a person. A person can be hindered, quenched, silenced, repressed or even evicted. The Bible tells not to quench the Holy Spirit. We can shut him down within and allow another spirit access and control.

The Holy Spirit has to be given access to every part of us. He will remain confined to the areas that are surrendered in us. He will drive out sickness if we yield our bodies. He will drive out emotional and mental torment if we yield our souls. He will drive out all spiritual bondage if we yield our spirits. We are slaves to the one whom we obey. If we do not yield to the Holy Spirit, which most do not, then we often by default yield to natural lusts, temptations and the complimentary demon. Let us be vigilant and alert.
